OV-099
Challenger
SLC 31&32, Cape Canaveral Air Station, FL
The Challenger was destroyed during a launch accident on January 28, 1986.  This fiberglas dome caps the Minuteman missle silo at Space Launch Complex 31 & 32 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. Withing the silo structure rests the remains of OV-099, Challenger. This may be glimpsed by KSC visitors taking the "Cape Canaveral: Then and Now" tour.

Downloading Image from KSC image files Approximately 50% of the orbiter was recovered from the ocean and ocean floor, including the Crew Cabin and the remains of all seven astronauts.  After investigation was complete, the debris was placed in four underground storage areas and two unused missile silos at Space Launch Complex 31 & 32 at Cape Canaveral Air Station.  No debris associated with the accident is on public display.  However, pieces like this elevon still wash ashore at Cocoa Beach, Florida. All such material remains the property of NASA and will be collected.  This is the largest piece to date, coming ashore December 17, 1996. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifice made.
