Spacecraft: Apollo BP-23
The
Saturn V at the US Space and Rocket Center was known as the Dynamic
Test Vehicle. It was the first Saturn V produced for dynamic
vibration
studies in the large Dynamic Test Facility at Marshall Space Flight
Center. After completetion of testing, designer of the Saturn
V and
chief of Marshall Werner von Braun, with a bit of slyness, petitioned
to have the vehicle placed in 'temporary storage' right off the
property, where the Space and Rocket Center was constructed. It has
since been placed under the care of the Smithsonian Institution, as
have been the other two Saturns, and declared a National Engineering
Landmark.
It is located in the Davidson Center for
Space Exploration, which opened its doors to the fully restored Saturn
on February 9, 2008. The Apollo
BP-23, which once sat outside in MSFC's rocket park, has also been
restored and mounted with the Saturn stack.
The paint scheme is consistant with
its original appearence, inlcuding the "USA" on the S-IVB stage.
The
third stage also include the smaller rocket package found on Saturn IB
second stages.
