The Apollo 9 Command Module is very accessible, with only a plexiglas hatch covering and 'kick panel' on the step to view inside. A wall prevents visitors from getting too close to the capsule. Nearby is the hatch, with signage indicating it will be placed on the capsule once hardware removed for later mission support (latches, hinges, etc.) is fabricated. The heat shield shows an interesting pattern caused by the former display stand at the Michigan Space and Science Center (see image below).

The Michigan Space and Science Center, on the grounds of Jackson Community College in Jackson, Mich., was closed in 2004. Most of its collection, including its curator, Stewart Bailey, found home at the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Apollo 9 capsule was sent to San Diego. |
